There are 3 parameters everybody wants in any project.
The project has to be:
- Cheap
- Fast
- Good
The golden rule is you can only have 2.
- A fast & cheap project is rarely gonna be good.
- A fast & good project isn’t cheap.
- And a cheap good project won’t be fast.
So please choose whether you want it cheap, or fast.
Don’t compromise on the good part.

He’s right!
I once saw this Hoss guy perform (that’s what it was) on stage at a MAX conference. He mentioned it then as well: http://www.minorissues.be/2007/10/17/3-parameters/
There is a fourth parameter: Better. On the three-legged stool this axiom rests, there is no space for improvement. Better (a measurable metric) projects lead to better products — especially when improvements are in the social arena: collaboration, alignment, and behavior.
Thanks for the comments Steven and William.
The “Better” parameter is very interesting to think about, could work as an argument for an iterative approach.
How many project sponsors accept the 2 out of 3 golden rule?
